On August
28th.1858, put ashore in Coquimbo, northern Chile’s port,
Orlié Antoine de Tounens. He was born at La Chaise, France in 1820; he was a
lawyer.
He stayed
during a year and half in Chile,
taking acknowledgment about indigenous customs and maturing his plan. In October 1860,
he travels to the shore of the Imperial river, region where Quilapán –indigenous chief
of the araucanians- because of his father’s death is the landlord. The witches
of the tribes had foretold that would get the Araucanian independence when a
white man was designed like their chief. This prophecy removed the
obstacles to Tounens and it eased the friendship with the indigenous chiefs,
specially with Quilapán. On November
17th.1860, accompanied by a court of warriors that presides
Quilapán, launches to the world the following proclamation: “We, prince Orlié
Antoine de Tounens, considering that the Araucania don’t depend of any state,
which is divided in tribes and a central government is claimed both for the
particular and general interest, we decree the following: Art 1st: A
constitutional and hereditary monarchy is founded in Araucania; the prince
Orlié Antoine de Tounens is named King. Art 2nd: In
case that the king hasn’t descendants, his heirs will be designed among the
members of his family, following the order that will be establish hereafter by
a royal orderly. Art 3rd:
Until the constitution of the great councils of state, the royal orderlies
will have the strength of law. Art 4th:
Our minister secretary of State, is in charge of them.
In spite of
the new kingdom included from the Bio-Bio river to the gulf of Reloncavi,
the new king thought that his sovereignty was very limited, and he wanted to
surpass to any other great conquerors of History, three days later, On November 20th
is erected with the same ceremony, king of the Patagonia.
Then he was
satisfied, so he got the zone, to the south of the Negro river, limited to the
east with the Atlantic Ocean. Because of lack of
resources he left for the future, the creation of the coin, inherent function
to the sovereignty.
After this
big job, Quilapán was charged to care the order in the kingdom, and later he started to go over his
vast dominations, with the objective that the chiefs of different tribes paid
homage to him.
The parties
last a year, each ceremony of recognition of Orlié I motivated tournaments,
military exercises and feasts where they had a lot of alcoholic drinks. On January 5th.1862, Orlié I, was resting under an apple tree, when a group of men arrested him.
He was
submitted to trial on July 19th.1862, the Justice Matus sentenced
stay of proceedings, because of the defendant was insane, ordering that he was
secluded at the madhouse of Santiago, from where he came out, after to be
claimed by the Business’ representative of France and was embarked
with destination to his country.
Set up in Paris, he publishes his memories in 1863. In 1869 is debarked at San Antonio’s bay by the
war ship “D’Entrescateaux”.
When he
arrived he was protected by all the indigenous chiefs, because they know that he’s
a friend of Quilapán, the chief of the tribes that are fighting against the
Chilean government, after a long situation he met again with his faithful
friend of 1860.
He took
part in the revolt, but the triumphs of the general Pinto, is obliged to leave
his kingdom again, friendly he farewells to Quilapán, whom he will not see
