- When the Apple store shuts down on occasional mornings, Mac fans
around the world cross their fingers and lust for the next iteration of
their favorite products, or curse Apple because they just bought
whatever was upgraded and are now SOL with a brand new but out dated
piece of gear. Today, it sucks to be you if you just purchased a
MacBook Pro.
Apple premiered long anticipated upgrades to its line of titanium clad
notebooks today, adding some sweet new features to the 15- and 17-inch
models. Most notably, the 15-inch
models are now graced by LED-backlit
LCDs. The LED
Upgrade is great for notebooks due to the fact that LEDs
use far less power than the incandescent bulbs more commonly employed,
thus allowing longer battery life. The new Santa Rosa Intel Core 2 Duo
CPUs in the upgraded Macs sport higher clock speeds than previous
models and will also consume less power.
Various other niceties, such as more ram and larger HDDs, as well as
new Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics cards round out the healthy update
to the MacBook Pro line. Buyers who''ve anticipated the upgrade and held
off on a purchase will be glad to learn base prices will remain the
same as previous models, $1,999 for the 15-inch, 2.2 GHz model; $2,499
for the 15-inch, 2.4 GHz model; and $2,799 for the 17-inch, 2.4 GHz
model.
The only major disappointment of the updates is the fact that the
17-inch MacBook Pro was not treated to an LED-backlighting upgrade. As
something of a consolation, a $100 upgrade will allow users to choose a
1,920 x 1,200 display, a decent boost from the old standard of 1680 x
1050.
