The Consonant C, c
Note:
· As in English, the c is pronounced as k before a, o, u, l, r, t (ca, co, cu, cla, clo, clu, cra, cro, cru, act, oct, uct).
· When two c´s appear together (cc) the first is pronounced as the letter k.
· Before e, i (ce, ci) c sounds like “th” in English (thing, think).
· Before h (ch) it is pronounced as it is in change, cheap, chill, choice, church.
· In Spanish, two c´s (cc) are frequently used to make the word termination “cción”.
· The sound of “cción” is as follows; The sound of the first c is like k and the sound of the second is like “th”. The word termination “ción” is equivalent to that of English “tion” (construcción –construction- demostración -demonstration). The combination
“ck” does not exist in Spanish.
Mistakes:
· Pronouncing the ch like k.
· Pronouncing the c in relationship with the vowels as it is in English.
Troubleshooter:
· In Spanish never pronounce the ch like “k”.
· When c appears in conjunction with vowels or consonants, this does not affect its pronunciation.
