Oriòn, The Hunter

por : Freelance

Autor : Misteries and Legends
Orion was the son of Poseidon, god of the sea, and Gaea (Juno to the Romans), goddess of the earth. At birth and grew so
extraordinary that it became a giant. So great was, he could walk along the bottom of the deep sea waters without ever cover him from the shoulders up. Orion is represented by a warrior raising his arch enemy and covering with a fleece. Beside him are his guard dogs: Canis Major and Canis Minor. After many adventures, Orion went to the island of Chios, where he soon fell in love with Merope, the daughter of King Oenopion. Such was his love for her who sought her in marriage. Oenopion consented, but first demanded the giant to prove his worth carrying out a difficult mission. Orion would have to exterminate large numbers of pests that were causing enormous damage to crops on the island. Once that Orion had exterminated all the vermin, the monarch refused to honor his word to Orion. Orion tried Oenopion revenge, but could not find it as it took refuge in an underground chamber so convoluted, it was virtually unreadable. Then, Orion rode further into a rage and fury, vented his anger over every living thing that crossed his path regardless of ferocity or innocence. Such was the carnage that Orion had caused his mother Gaia had to intervene by asking, to discontinue his absurd task. Orion, violent and thoughtless, he ignored the words of his mother and went to his guns, despite repeated warnings from Gaia. One day, when the magnificent Orion, was meeting with friends, conceited and that neither the most terrible beasts such as tigers, panthers, lions or snakes were able to produce any fear, his mother Gaia reached the limit of their patience , which sent him a very poisonous scorpion. Orion, seeing him, could not contain his ironic smile at the ridiculousness of this insignificant adversary sent by Gaia. Orion and the scorpion was entrusted stung him into a heel with its powerful poison stinger, and no sooner did that, Orion crushed his gavel. The terrible poison spread through the blood of Orion and it fell down half dying. When he saw that death was imminent, asked for help and pleaded revenge to the almighty Zeus, and that death was stalking him inglorious for a character in his mood. He asked the supreme god who placed him in heaven with his two faithful hunting dogs (Canis Major and Canis Minor) and a hare (Lepus), so that when men look up at the dark starry nights, remember the adventures the great hunter Orion. He also asked the domain Zeus tempests, storms, ice and winds, being able to avenge his mother earth (Gaia). Gaia, in revenge for the crimes of Orion, sent a scorpion to be confronted with it, injecting poison and dying in his turn. Zeus was condescending toward Orion and answered their prayers. The earth shook, and since then it has done to this day every time I have seen appear to Orion on the sky, as it always has brought the wind, cold, storms, ice, snow and frost , so common on Earth in winter, coinciding with the arrival of this constellation. Zeus was also commissioned to bring the Scorpion (Scorpius) in the sky, but was careful to put it as far as possible the giant so that never again return to face. So, when Orion disappears from the sky is when it appears in the constellation Scorpio. While Orion appears in winter Scorpius does in the summer, perpetuating their struggle.
